Where would one find this idol, which is neither a damsel nor in distress?

Got it...the Indiana Jone stunt Spectacular (or the gift shop next to it)...
(Digging it out = Archeology)
(Damsel in Distress = Marion or the Blonde from #2)

oh cripes! Kate capshaw was a damsel who put ME in distress. must be nice to be Spielberg's girlfriend at the time. I did not like IJ&TOD at all. raiders and last crusade were epic. I even liked crystal skull. TOD? not so much.

The last two guesses from Illinois are much warmer; at least they're in the correct park.

I knew all along my clue would be way too obscure, so here's a hint: "A Damsel in Distress" is the name of a movie musical. The title of one of the Gershwin songs from that movie will tell you where to look.

Okay, so that means the Great Movie Ride. The background makes me think it is inside the theater, but could be in the entrance also.

I looked up the soundtrack and did not see a song that made sense as a clue (unless I am completely clueless). :o

This is to the right of the entrance to The Great Movie Ride, behind the sorcerer's hat. Since you have to look up to see it, the song "Things Are Looking Up" kept going through my head. A little research led me to the movie called "A Damsel in Distress".

You could also do degrees of separation:
Look up to see the statue.
"Things Are Looking Up" from the movie "A Damsel in Distress".
Fred Astaire, George Burns and Gracie Allen were in that movie.
Burns and Allen were also in "International House".
"International House" is set in China (in the city of WuHu, where Doctor Wong has invented television).
The statue is at a replica of the Chinese Theater.

Convoluted, eh?
