Apple releases Aperture 3

Missed this one. ; Aperture 3 will run in 64-bit mode on Snow Leopard and 64-bit processors.

You can now create, export and import Presets. ; New version comes with "dozens" of presets.

Brushes to use for applying adjustments to direct areas of photos. (Sounds Nik-like)

Finally, Curves and Chromatic Aberration tools and new slideshows..in all over 200 new features/improvements. ; Many were the ones Aperture users have been asking for.

Also, Apple Store is down this morning with rumors of new laptops being announced later today. ;
 
Today's a good day isn't it?

This was rumored to be released during the iPad event, guess it wasn't ready for a prime time event!

Only $99 for the upgrade, $199 brand new.
 
It is if you have an Intel Mac. ; I am still using my old Powerbook G4 with Tiger.

So, for me the upgrade price is a little more. ; Will see if the MacBooks get updated today. Maybe lower prices and more horsepower? ; One can hope!
 
I wish that they would come up with a Windows version of this program. ; It would help me get used to it until I can get my hands on a mac book pro

I'd go with Lightroom on a PC unless you are planning to move to Mac soon. I don't see Apple making a PC version as it's a Pro application and those are exclusively Mac. ; In fact, iTunes is the only program I can think of which Apple makes for the PC.
 
Been playing around with 3.0 for the past few hours and this looks to be a really good upgrade. One new feature, that I really like, is the metadata now actually displays focus points. Brushes looks to be an interesting twist too.
 
Its interesting how Apple came out with a new version without a beta release as opposed to Adobe which has had their new beta out for awhile now and plans to release LR3 this year. ;

Looks like a nice upgrade for Aperture users and looks like it has caught up with Lightroom, for now. ; I like the focus point display, that is something LR does not do as far as I know.
 
Apple has been testing it for months with some of the pros like Joe McNally, David Schloss and few others who have talked about it on their blogs and websites since yesterday's release. ; Apple kept this one quiet. ; Easy with all the iPad buzz the last few months.

David Schloss' MacCreate.com is the NAPP version for Aperture. ; There's a paid subscription but the content seems worth it. ; Once I get to A3, I'll probably sign up.

And this is why I find myself having a hard time pulling the trigger on a switch from the PC to Mac laptop world. ; I'm drooling over the 17" Aluminum MacBook Pro but it's $2500. ; So now it has me wondering if I could get by with a 15" display. ; Not to mention that if I get the MacBook Pro I'll probably not be able to resist the iMac
 
Ray, those rumors didn't happen this week so I'll probably go with the current 15" Macbook Pros. ;

My Powerbook is a 15.4 inch screen and I do all my photo editing work on it with out a problem. ; The new MacBook Pros are LED backlight and are beautiful...however, I would pay the extra money for the anti-glare screen. ; Those glossy screens would give me a headache after a while. ; Way too reflective for my tastes when I've tested them at the local Apple Store.
 
Didn't make it to the Apple Store today, so I ordered it online. ; (Free shipping, so the price is the same)

They already shipped it! ; I was just getting used to a few days before shipping things....
 
Might have to try the Trial version...I remember when Aperture was first announced ; (saw David Bergman when he was touring and demonstrating it) I swore that I was going to get it, but some how I ended up with Lightroom and I love it.
 
FWIW I doublechecked the email; it says shipped but it's not supposed to arrive until 2/18!

Which coincides with Amazon's availability date.

The tracking # works now, but says it's in Kentucky (which is better than somewhere in the Greater Washington-New York Metropolitan area)
 
I think the winter storms is really slowing things up. ; If it stays in Kentucky for a long time, that is probably where they will ship all Aperture 3 disks from once the get them..

BTW, I have an Apple package stuck in Lewisberry, PA. Hopefully it will be here tomorrow.
 
Okay, I may be a dolt here, but I have what is probably a stupid question, Where does Aperture fit into the post processing world?

I only take a few photos per day, unless I'm on vacation, when I usually shoot a few hundred. ; To date, all I've done is go through them in iPhoto, and do my crop/touch-ups there.

I own Photoshop Elements, but never really got into how to effectively use that program.

So, does Aperture offer something that I'm missing, and should seriously be considered as an addition to my software?

Hopefully, this isn't too base of a question, but I appreciate any thoughts on this.

Boris, Aperture is Apple's RAW processing and digital image management software (it does both). ; It's designed with a better database than iPhoto, and now with A3 it adds things like Faces built-in.
