anyone out there a user or know a user of this camera, i'm thinking of upgrading my point and shoot and this is the one i'm most considering
we are cruising on the magic, westbound panama canal to los angeles may 08, and it's advised not to carry around a large camera in acapulco, plus it may be easier on some of the shore excursions to have a small body camera along
5d and bag of lenses making the trip, plus tripod, have verandah cabin for the canal, and for 2 days post cruise at dl
open to other makes/models, only requirement of mine is that it shoot raw, i use the conversion options a lot these days, my convertor program is breezebrowser pro, works with a lot of cameras, and more added all the time
 
I have a G9 and I like it a lot. It's a great little camera - solidly built (even better than the other G-Series cameras). I only wish it had the articulated LCD like previous models. What would you like to know?
 
how easy and intuitive for a canon user are the menus, do you have to drill down deep to get a lot of functions
i'm looking to use it on castaway cay, i may get the waterproof housing for it and take it snorkeling on aruba, horseback in puerto vallarta, maybe as a walkaround while at dl, does the zoom length suit what you need/want from a walkaround P&S 90% of the time, i know 100% is never achieved or that's the camera we all would own
basically it comes down to are you convinced it was a good buy for the money, i know the body is a little bigger than many consider a point n shoot, i am stepping up from an s40, i find the real small slim cameras too difficult for me to steady and shoot sharp with, i think the g series bodies are about as small as i can go with my mitts

I just found this site, so go easy on me. I am only and amateur photo person, and I just bought a canon G7. ( I know, it doesn't shoot RAW) but , frankly I don't do much photoshop work etc., so for me it was OK, esp. since I got and "open box" one for 1/3 the price with 4 yr. warranty.
I wanted an upgrade P&S for my disney trip, and also b/c I tend to carry one around all the time, for those quick need shots.

Had this one for 1week and am still learning about the menu's , and how to get around quickly. I mostly like to take Nature site ( macro). This is extremely light , despite it's boxy look and sturdy feel in the hand. I picked up a lowepro edit 100 bag on ebags with my discount and it is big enough for the charger, extra battery, camera cards and some personal stuff I might need, so may ditch the purse in the park.

My only fear is... no lense cap. Tho, I have an old olympus z50 that has the sliding "door". What does one do if it should jam?
Other than that, I am enjoying shooting photos out and about in all lighting conditions,enjoy the quick access to change iso, and I assume I will be able to zip thru the onscreen menu with a little more use. I have worked my way thru the stumbles of " hey, how do I change apperture?" etc.

Welcome to the boards mousegal.

No you're not nuts. The upper Canon (and most other brands) P&S have enough of the SLR like features that you can begin exploring the modes beyond Auto or just plain P. It also has manual so you could use it for fireworks where you determine the exposure instead of the camera. Doesn't the lens have an internal lens cover when you turn it off? I know my wife's Powershot does. My old S1IS came with a cap, but the lens on that sticks way out.

Another good thing is you can use an external flash on it well! Feel free to ask any other questions, and enjoy the boards!

No need to worry about this group of people. They all remember what it was like when they first picked up a camera and offer great advice.

I was in your shoes a little over a year ago and through this site have gotten great advice on how to take better pictures

HI, thanks for the pixie dust welcome. I'm the one with the G7 (open box) . Been 2 weeks, and I've been reading and playing and feel pretty comfortable with the menu's etc, shooting modes. I am thinking I got a real sweet deal here, as the body will take some other lens if you screw of the ring on front.
I am quite happy with how light the camera is, even with extra battery, cards and small camera case ( lowepro edit 100).
Finding some very good tips on this board and disboards photo area for shooting.
Picked up some "moleskin" notebooks ( ultra thin and small) to jot down shooting tips, and ideas for things to look for. I like the not so average shots<G>.
