Expanded ISO

So my 5D can expand the ISO in both directions to 50 and 3200. ; How does this work? ; Is it really different from the normal ISO settings or is this some type of "fudge" factor along the same lines as how they extend zoom ranges?

In inquiring minds want to know!! ???
 
Fudge factor.

ISO 50 is overexposed 100 pulled down 1 stop; you lose dynamic range.

ISO 3200 is underexposed 1600 pushed 1 stop via processor; you lose dynamic range and gain noise.

In reality all ISOs outside the "standard" (Canon/Oly is ISO 100, Nikon is ISO 200) are pushed/pulled by the processor.
