West of Austin there is a wildlife preserve that is open to the public. ; It is also the home to a natural "pool" that is open for swimming so long as the bacteria levels are not excessive (usually the case after a rainstorm).
You have to walk a half a mile on moderately rugged terrain to get there (although they do have a steep paved path for emergency vehicles!), and there are a few miles of trails through the preserve as well.
