New D3 FM includes ref. to 6048x4032 image sizes

1) If Sony gives/sells Nikon their new sensor, this makes sense.

2) It also makes sense that the D3's FM is being programmed to be the base FM for a D3x, because Canon did that with the MkIII line.

3) And I like Thom Hogan's thoughts on this, it being that there are some in the field right now.


Which makes for an interesting discussion in that the rumor is Sony's 24mp is going to come out at a 5D price point, not a 1Ds/D3x price point. (Because if Sony does price it that high, well, where is their camera between the A700 and it?)


But hey, if anyone out there has a D3, I'll start posting when firmware is updated for that camera is as well! (Which it was this week, BTW)

I just read something the other day from Ken Rockwell where he was saying that Nikon has a pattern of announcing an update to their flagship models between a year to a year and a half after the original was announced. They announced the D1 in June of 1999 and the D1x in February 2001 which is 1.5 years. The D2H was announced in July 2003 and the D2X was announced in September 2004 which was 1.2 years. In each of those cases, the megapixels doubled between the original and the update. If they continue to follow that pattern, you could be looking at a 24mp D3X announced between August of 2008 (in time for Photokina) and February 2009.

Personally, 12mp is enough for what I do, I probably wouldn't go after the newest version, but I may be tempted to pick up a D3 when the price drops...

I agree with the 12mp part. Just give me FF and the lower noise that results with larger pixel size. And more than 3fps. I just found that bit of news interesting.

My thoughts exactly. I hope that when they announce the model in the D3 line that the price of the D3 drops like the D2Xs did. If it does, I'd have to seriously consider selling my D2Xs to upgrade to the D3 just to pick up the high ISO/ low noise capability and the ability to go ultra wide again.
