New lens

Hello all,

So I have a trip to the world planned for the beginning of October and I just got my new 50mm prime f/1.8 lens this morning. I haven't had time to play with it yet, and am not sure how much playtime I will get in before the trip. So, my questions are these:
a. Will this be a good lens as the primary on my trip?
b. I'm excited to have a lens this fast for some of the shows and dark type rides--Any favorite rides or show seating to use it in?

Thanks for any help, I'm looking forward to taking tons of pictures and being able to show them off here on my return.

I take it you'll be visiting the other coast

With your Digital Rebel, it'll be an interesting experience using it as a primary lens, since it will be basically a portrait lens due to the crop factor - it'll be hard to get wide shots, and anything of the castle except from farther away than you think.

Other than that, with the exception of the near-impossible dark rides[nb]Peter Pan, Dinosaur, Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye[/nb], you can enjoy photographing many rides....I think for seating you'll want to be near the front row of many different shows, like Nemo or The Festival of the Lion King.

I agree with Roger, the 50mm may be a little long for some shots. But, it is a lot of fun and very easy to carry a camera with this lens. Its so light and short!

It will be a godsend on dark rides (crank the iso way up) but it will force you to think ; and plan your shots since you cannot zoom. ; It will help you be more disciplined that way. ;

second what tim says, a long time photo class exercise in shooting/composition disipline is to force yourself to shoot with 1 prime, be it 50mm or something else for a whole day, or 100 shots or a time of a week , something long enough to force you to get to know that lens and learn foot zooming

Great point, Tim. ; Since I grew up on prime lenses (55mm and 135mm, on a 35mm film camera), I usually forget to play with the zoom when using my zoom lenses - I just set it where I want it and shoot. ; My 18-200 is spoiling me, though...making me lazier. ; I'm thinking about doing a day with nothing but my 50mm 1.8 just to get that edge back.
