New Little Baby

'Delivered' by UPS today- she's just 1lb 6oz, and not even a Nikon.

Ding! ; Right you are Roger.

(I should have posted this in the 'Where am I' section.)

My Leica M8 compromise with my checking account. ; ;)

I was going to ask for info on what all those gauges mean, but then I found a review of the camera. ; Exposure mode on the right dial, either auto shutter speed with exposure compensation or manual shutter speed selection, with inset ISO selection wheel that looks just like a film camera. ; I didn't realize this was digital until I saw that review.

Then the other side has gauges to show file setting, either raw or large or medium sized jpeg, the fuel gauge shows battery capacity (I love that), and the other gauge is white balance. ; The large outer gauge is estimated picture capacity of the card.

I'm sure you know what all that is by now, Jeff, but I was dying to know and figure some others might be curious as well.

very cool Jeff!
I too was curious about the dials and gauges. I wouldnt mind a mini review!

The analog gauges are way way cool. ; When you power it up they don't 'snap' into place- they just rise into position. ; The lever cocks the shutter I think I read. ; Subtle and lightweight- not much bigger than a P&S.

I'll definitely give some feedback after I get to know it. ; ;

That's Very Cool. Can't wait to read your review & see some pics from it. The gauges kinda make you think of the gauges in a planes cockpit. LOL

I got to use the new rig a bit this weekend- especially since it's all I took with me. ; Some quick observations with this setup. ; First off- Whoa- it is really a different animal than anything I have ever really used. ; I like it but it is going to take a lot of practice to get proficient at using- especially focusing on moving targets.

  • The camera takes ultra-conservative pictures- even at +2 EV it was nearly impossible to blow any highlights unless I forced the camera into doing something it did not want to do. ; Seems to underexpose by at least 1 stop.
  • The camera eats batteries like crazy. ; It came with two spare batteries and I had them in rotation the whole weekend. ; Pretty much had to change them every time I put in a new 2gb SD card (The biggest the camera takes BTW.)
  • The Auto-WB is excellent. ; Better than any Nikon or Fuji DSLR I have ever owned. ; I have a weird mix of lights in my kitchen that confuses every camera- every camera until now anyway.
  • 40mm is nowhere near wide enough for me on a crop body. ; I need to find something a lot wider when I can.

Here are a 'few' samples. ; ;)

Wow! ; The color in those sunsets just leaps off the screen. ; Did you have to make any adjustments to those or are they straight out of the camera?
