16.2mp
6fps
1080p HD video with "full time autofocus"
ISO 100-25600
Dual SDXC slots
New 2016 pixel metering system (this is double the old one that is in the D300s, D3s, D700, etc)
100% viewfinder
39 point AF system
and they didn't take the lens motor away

I am really surprised by the specs on this one. ; It's priced below the D300s but it seems to be superior in every way.

It also has the AF micro adjust, and "manual control" during video. ; And it's priced $100 above the 60D, which is going to be interesting to say the least....

Supposedly this is the new Sony sensor which is in the A55 and A580.

Ray, I'm starting to get the inclination that Nikon is going to pull a Sony and move their FX line to be the D300s replacement. ; Sony considers their 24mp A850 to be their current "prosumer" model, but I am starting to think that they will be announcing an A7x and a A7xx at Photokina next week: ; Sony has no cameras between $750 and $2000. ; Nikon now has two, but I don't think the D300s is worth the extra money over the D7000.

Put the D3s sensor on the D700, call it the D700s, price it below $2k, release a new FX sensor around the current price point and then you'll see an upgrade path....

Heck the D7000 is amazing when you compare it to the 7D and the specs on that camera.....

It's funny you should say that. ; I just said to Tom Bricker (aka WDWFigment) that I was wondering if Nikon was going to convert the D300 to a prosumer, affordable FX model and let the D7000 fill the spot the current D300 line fills.

That is why I'm waiting and not upgrading. ; I just feel it in my bones that an affordable FX model will be coming real soon. ; If they did that, they have to know we'll all have to buy new lenses :)

I think that's also why the 28-300FX was released.

But I'm loving this competition! ; Keeps everyone on their toes![nb]Except Olympus, they seem to have upset their base by releasing a new expensive upper end model ($1699!) but no new 4/3 lenses.....[/nb]

I may end up giving the D80 to my oldest son. he has a D40 and the D80 would be a nice upgrade for him. I am liking what I see on the d7000 as far as burst mode and most likely lower noise at iso1600 ; and having the extra pixels will help with cropping in which I need at Forsythe and to get more reach then my tamron would cost a fortune so for me this is great

Rob G has a few interesting tidbits:

He mentioned that there will be NO wired remote option for the D7000. ; Instead, you have to use a wireless shutter release but.... there will be a sensor on the back in addition to the front for that purpose....which is why the wireless remotes never really took off in the first place for 'pro' use.

But he claims that Nikon is using phase-detect during movie recording....which I recently heard about - but it is achieved by losing part of the sensor space and then putting the AF sensors there...which doesn't make sense really. ; I'll have to look into that.

Wow, I'm very surprised and impressed with the specs for this camera. It has basically everything that the D300 has that I wish were on my D90. Until now I was sure that my next upgrade would be the D300 or whatever replaces it. Now I'm not so sure, as it looks like the D7000 will have everything I wanted to upgrade for and stay with a DX camera. I seem to be in the minority in that I have no real desire for a FX camera. Sure, the ISO would be nice, but I think I'd miss the extra reach more than I currently miss the wide angle end.

This camera really has me thinking all of a sudden-

Maybe this is all I really need and I should sell the D700 while I can still get a decent price for it- unload some FX glass- pick up a DX UWA and just be happy (and light)...

...or wait and see what amazing D700-sized-FX model (with video finally) is around the corner, resign myself to lugging heavy gear forever, and just be happy (and broke)...

....decisions decisions.

I could swear I replied to this post!

[me=Roger]furiously checks KEH.com for the price of an image stabilized 300/2.8[/me]

Hmm. ; $4700.

Umm, nope, it doesn't change my plans!

Yeah I know, they just don't have any used Nikon 300/2.8 with VR in stock.

But I did preorder my SLT from B&H!

Hey, they've got a Canon 400/2.8 (not IS)!
