For a few minutes I pondered if I should post this. ; But I was one of those who got burned by the MkIII. ; Which is why I'm on the dark side now.

Honestly I hoped that Canon had fixed the problems by using a brand new AF system.

Let's just say that the main test that the MkIII failed on was fixed. ; The rest, you'll need to read for yourself.

Interesting read, but Mr. Galbraith should not be considered the end all be all for camera reviews. At the moment, his conclusions seem to go against all the other positive reviews of the camera, including Scott Bourne's, and should definitely be used as a differing opinion.

Ultimately, an informed user will have to see how the camera works for them. If it fails to perform to the buyers expectation then they should return it. Of course this camera is geared towards the Pro market and it will be interesting to see how the agencies respond to the new camera. The Olympics will be a good indicator.

Personally, I am looking forward for my 1DmkIV to arrive at the local camera store. However, i'll be the first to return it, if I do not think it will live up to it's price tag.

The more I hear about this camera, the less likely I will be willing to spend that kind of money for it. ; In fact it seems that there hasn't been a lot of raves about its performance, just its specs. ; Hopefully more user feedback will be forthcoming and firmware relases will take care of any issues.

FWIW, I was reading a review in the March issue of Pop Photo in Borders and they gave it an okay rating, noting some difficulties in focusing in lower light situations where they noted the Nikons performed better. (not sure if they were using the latest firmware release)

I guess I was anticipating a slam dunk from Canon with this camera and maybe thats why I am a bit disappointed so far. ; I'm still evaluating my options in any case, even leaving open a switch to Nikon.

Either way, I still have mucho ; $$$ to save!!

No, he's not....but he was a firm Canon shooter before the Mk3 arrived, and he was instrumental for getting Canon to admit that there were widespread problems with that camera that led to two recalls and numerous firmware updates.

The biggest problem is having the time to put the camera body through a test within a return period that doesn't violate a camera store's return policy. ; B&H only allows 200 shutter count to be able to return a body. ; Yeah, you could exchange it, but....
 
That type of return policy is just asinine. It is also one of the main reasons I buy my main gear locally and through Amazon. Both give me a 30 day return policy with little to no questions asked. No camera is perfect, as both Nikon and Canon have had their flaws and recalls in the past. It probably would also be a good idea to rent the body for a weekend or two, especially if one does make their living off of their gear.

The only thing that has me confused is why Canon choose not to use the new 63 zone metering system and digital level as in the 7D.

My only question is when Tim is going to put up an Amazon associates link ;)

Might also tempt me to just go ahead and buy 5 bolts from Amazon when all I need is one. ; Home Depot didn't seem to have shorter ones for my "project".

I would concur that this definitely deserves its own post. ; While B&H is great and everyone here praises it, typically Amazon has lower prices, a more lenient return policy, and does not offer end users cashback directly. ; While B&H may give you a higher return percentage than Amazon (just my speculation based on my knowledge of CB referrals--I don't know if it's actually the case), I'll bet A LOT more people would buy through an Amazon link.
 
My first response to that article was "the dude bought five D3 bodies and then replaced them with five D3s bodies? ; And now he's bought five 1DmkIVs?

Yikes. ; Makes me wonder if he's using his graphics experience to print money instead of take pictures.


I'm not really taking sides in this, but.. I thought Rob G was quite specific that he had problems in some applications and it worked well in others. ; Now we get a response of someone who used the camera in one specific application and said it worked fine. ; He feels that what he did is just like fast moving sports after Rob detailed how some fast moving sports tracked better than others.

I don't find it entirely convincing.

The whole thing is academic to me, though. ; I've never seriously tried to use the AI servo function on the comparatively pedestrian AF systems that my cameras have had. ; Some time I should show what happened when I got to come up on stage at the bird show (the name of which escapes me) at Animal Kingdom. ; I used it as my first real test of AI servo. ; It flopped. ; But I'm not really complaining, that's never been my usual shooting style, I'm just a little disappointed that it wasn't better.
