Transcend 16gb Compact Flash $56.15 at NewEgg.com

I used their 8 gb SDHC card in the Edsel. While it was "fast" for SDHC standards, the Sandisk Extreme III SDHC did laps around it. I've only heard good things, i.e. no major data failures, but I'm thinking that those of the past have gone away from the major manufacturers - it's only questionable sources that you have to be aware of (like don't buy Sandisk on eBay). But Hoodman, and now PNY are pretty good.

133x speed seems pretty fast for non-UDMA. But will be slooooooow on a UDMA camera/card reader. (compared to UDMA that is)

i dont have UDMA but i know how fast your system runs. i have ultra II's right now so i am sure this will be faster than that, esp. if i actually remember the card reader and don't use the internal reader. BTW, i did have a firewire port on my laptop... DUH!

It should be a hair faster than the Ultra II.

Actually according to Rob G's tests it should be more than twice as fast downloading via the FW card reader.....
 
long time transcend user here, 4gb, then 8gb,( for panama cruise) i have 5 of those, purchased back in the spring for around the same price as the 4gb was last year (purchased for med cruise)
i've only had 1 bad card,a 2gb that came bad, would not format, camera could not even recognize it, right out of the box bad, immediately replaced at no cost to me by the vendor,zip zoom fly
i like my transcends, and in fact as long as the prices keep dropping and the cards get larger i see no reason to invest in a portable hard drive/viewer ala epson,wolverine, etc
especially since we all know about my oft stated paranoia about having a whole vacations worth of images going down the drain from a drive failure
a couple of $60 dollar cards look pretty cheap while on a $12000 cruise
just my .02 worth

addendum, i also feel a viewer/drive would not do anything for me, as it's been quite a few years since i slowed down long enough while on vacation to do any photo editing or review, if it's blurry on the camera lcd and that's not what i wanted it's deleted right then and there, otherwise it waits for home, and the 32 inch calibrated monitor, that's where i can really decide keeper or not

only problem is i dont have a FW card reader, but i do have a USB2 reader. i just keep forgetting to bring it. i might just buy another one and leave it in the laptop bag. they are certainly cheap enough.

I don't use my Wolverine as a downloader anymore. I use it as a portable hard drive. I'll bring my laptop with my on a trip, download the pics to my laptop nightly, and then backup the pics to the Wolverine. Playing the odds that two hard drives won't fail at the same time. As for just keeping the pics on the card, well, UDMA cards are still pricey and with UDMA cameras you don't want to go back....

And as for the LCD screen, back when I had the Edsel - it only embeds a very small JPG rather than a full size one (about 500 pixels wide) so almost every shot looked blurry on the LCD. Then I would go home and check, and hey, only 75% were blurry because of "user error", and "user error" I mean focusing on something other than the active focus point.
