I'm interested in starting my own website, but I don't really know anything about them. Anyone have suggestions as to the best choice of free web host?

Check with your ISP first. I get 10mb of web space from Verizon, and I think Comcast does a similar amount. After that I think Yahoo does web hosting.

I'm not sure of any decent free hosting out there anymore. I know in the past there was Geocities, which is part of Yahoo! so you can try there.
But my current hosting company, 1and1.com has plans beginning at $4 a month, and for $5 a month you can get a lot more.
