Disney Parks, Volunteer Canada and the Boys & Girls Club of East Dartmouth Look to Inspire New Volunteers During Disney Parks "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" Program
HALIFAX, Sept. 29 /CNW/ - In celebration of the first-of-its-kind Disney Parks' campaign, "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day", volunteers joined forces to lend a hand at the Boys and Girls Club of East Dartmouth.

Beginning January 1, 2010 Disney Parks will commemorate the volunteer spirit with a free one-day admission ticket to a Walt Disney World Resort in Florida or Disneyland Resort in California theme park to the first 1 million people who volunteer a day of their time. Volunteer Canada, an international partner of HandsOn Network, helped bring this campaign to Canada. Working with agencies and volunteer centres in cities across the country, hundreds of volunteers were mobilized at volunteering events such as this one in Halifax.

The Boys and Girls Club of East Dartmouth partnered with the community and all three levels of government to construct an innovative green facility, a first-of-its-kind in Nova Scotia. Volunteers are helping with landscaping on the state-of-the-art green roof and enhancing the outdoor areas around the building. Once completed, they will welcome the community to tour the new facility.

"We are so excited to welcome the community to our new green building," says John Burton, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of East Dartmouth. "This facility helps us meet our mission by providing a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life."

In East Dartmouth, there are over 1,000 single-parent families, with many families earning an income lower than $30,000. The Boys and Girls Club helps these families and others by providing a place where every child is listened to, respected and valued in an environment of inclusion and acceptance.

Beyond today's events, Volunteer Canada and HandsOn Network, the volunteer-focused arm of Points of Light Institute and the largest volunteer network in the United States, will provide other "family-friendly" volunteer activities for those wishing to participate in the "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" campaign. Starting January 1, 2010, guests can go to www.DisneyParks.ca to search for volunteer opportunities in their area.
