A walk around Longhorn Dam with the 16-35VR

Finally got out and took the new lens for a non-work spin....

Looking at the dam:

Thanks Jeff! ; I'm still surprised that I'm not having to do any sharpening to the images in A3. ; I think I told BorderFX to sharpen the image but I think that's because I noticed that it was losing some sharpness with it's JPG engine.

Roger, I totally love the colors in these photographs. :-* ; Reminds me of the Caribbean. ; And I especially like the photo of the tree with the old ladder rungs going up. ; Makes you wonder what used to be there, and picture little boys climbing and laughing or young lovers climbing up for a better view. ; Leaves something up to the imagination, which is fun.

Spring's a comin'! ; Soon...I hope!
 
Any thoughts on the 16-35 vs the 14-24? The 16-35 looks to have a bit more distortion, but not much. Curious to hear your opinion.
 
Do you have any shots with close focus or forground subjects yet? ; That is my favorite use of UWA's.

Hmm. ; Yes, there is more barrel distortion, and I think it's more evident with straight lines close to the focal plane.

But so far I'm glad I waited for this lens (mainly because I hadn't bought the 14-24 yet!). ; I think the big draw will be with the VR at night - I didn't need it during the day but at f/8 the corners are sharp enough on my copy. ; You're not going to be using this kind of lens for sports so the f/2.8 isn't necessary to stop action in so-so light.....and I think the VR will be huge for the video crowd.

Basically the two lenses are into camps - one for "prosumer" use and one for professional interior/landscape use where for some reason you want to shoot in really bad light....or the cab of a locomotive.

Hmm. ; Maybe. ; I think I did a few of this for "work", but there wasn't that many subjects at that portion of the park I was at....maybe in 2 months ; ;)
 
Nice stuff Rog - and a very nice looking day for photos. ; Looks like some fun with landscapes so far - and the converging lines shots are always fun with UWA - I like the 2nd 'on the bridge' B&W the best of those as I like the richer contrast. ; Definitely experiment with some close foreground/distant background shots...much fun to be had!

Yes, it was gorgeous...amazing how the weather has turned here (how many days ago did it snow, and now we're basking in 70 degree weather), and this park is literally 2-3 minutes away from my workplace. ; The other side of the dam is where the birds love to hang out and "fish" for "fish" in a "barrel". ; I actually had never stopped by this parking area before - been over on the other side of the lake and walked around, but not here. ; Next time I'll walk further down....
