I noticed a very interesting article on Jim Hill Media today.
I really hope if they do close PI (as we have grown to know it) they will keep a couple of the clubs open. I really enjoy the Adventures club and 8 Trax.
Lights out at Pleasure Island
The future of WDW's nighttime entertainment district suddenly looks a whole lot darker, now that Disney has stripped lighting & sound equipment out of "Motion" as well as selling off PI's signature system of outdoor spotlights
As you drove west on I-4 at night, they were one of the main signs that you had finally arrived at the edge of Walt Disney World property. Those spotlights that swirled in the skies over Pleasure Island.
Well, late last week, PI's signature light system went dark. Why For? Because WDW Property Control put this nighttime entertainment district's eight Sky Trackers up for bid. According to documents that JHM received this past weekend, Disney was hoping to get a minimum of $16,500 for the Island's four 4,000 watt units & the four 2,000 watt units.
Mind you, these Sky Trackers weren't the only parts of PI that were up for bid last week. Speakers & stage lights that had recently been stripped out of the Island's "Motions" nightclub were also available for purchase through WDW Property Control.
Now please keep in mind that this equipment was not being put up for sale because Disney World plans on replacing it anytime soon. Nope. The real reason that Mickey is pulling the plug on those spotlights as well as stripping those speakers & stage lights out of "Motions" is because they're now hoping to make Pleasure Island seem that much less appealing to WDW guests. So that attendance levels will continue to drop for WDW's nighttime entertainment district.
And once PI attendance levels drop below a certain threshhold ... Well, that's all the justification that WDW execs will need to begin shutting down Pleasure Island's other nightclubs. So that this section of Downtown Disney can then become an extension of the West Side. An area that's mostly made up of shops & restaurants.
As you might expect, given the current situation ... The mood at "Motion" is pretty bleak these days. I mean, you have to remember that the cast members who work at this particular PI nightclub just saw their next door neighbor -- the Rock 'N' Roll Beach Club -- closed back in February ... And what with all of the lighting & sound equipment that just got carried out of their club, it's not all that hard for these folks to buy into the rumors that are currently flying around WDW property. Which suggest that "Motion" could be out of business as early as the end of next month.
Mind you, the cast members who work at "8 Trax" have also been hearing that their nightclub could soon be closing. Only in that version of the Pleasure-Island-revamp rumor, "8 Trax" would be shut down so that Disney could then break down the wall that separates this PI venue from "Mannequins Dance Palace." Which would allow the Mouse to create one massive nightclub that could then service all of the guests who were looking for a place on property to go dancing.
As to which dance club will actually be closing next (More importantly, what this all means for Pleasure Island's other venues; The Comedy Warehouse, the BET Soundstage Club and the Adventurers Club) ... Who can say? From what I've been hearing from people who are actually privy to the PI redo plans, this project is still very much in flux.
But that said, given that PI's signature outdoor spotlight system has already been sold off and will be hauled away later this week ... The future of WDW's nighttime entertainment district now definitely looks a whole lot darker.
I really hope if they do close PI (as we have grown to know it) they will keep a couple of the clubs open. I really enjoy the Adventures club and 8 Trax.
