ok d7000 users. I am thinking very seriously of getting a d7000 in the next few days. I was wondering how the focusing speed and high ISO is ? I realize lens play a part in the focusing speed as well and I am hoping to also upgrade that next year
 
well I found one online after searching a lot. they are hard to find. should have it by Tuesday or Wed. Would love a FF Scott but the glass that is required for them is way outta my budget especially the big teles
 
You were lucky to find one. ; If there is one thing Nikon does not have is enough manufacturing capacity. ; They better watch it as they are losing market share because of it. ;

I think you made a good choice because of the kind of photography you do. ; I wouldn't give up the crop factor either if I did as much wildlife photography as you have done this year. ; As you have read, the D7000 is being heralded as the best digital camera Nikon has EVER produced.

BTW, Ken Rockwell's D7000 User Guide will help you get up to speed fast with the new camera. ;
 
thanks for the info Scott. It does seem to be a lot of camera for the money.
Guess it is time to sell the d80 now. will keep the d90 of course
 
Howie, ; Jeff Fillmore has a D7000 and has gotten some amazing low light shots out of it. ; You might want to send him a PM to see what he thinks about it.
 
it is on the fed ex truck now. I can't wait to try it out. indoors that is as it is very cold and windy
 
Thom Hogan's review is now up. Very interesting read.

Amongst the interesting things he thinks is that the D400 may be a pro body. I've seen that speculation a few places now. Perhaps that's why the d300 replacement isn't expected for a while yet. It also complicates things, as I was expecting and planning to get a D300 size DX body to replace my D90. If it turns put to be a full size D3 size pro body I'd have to seriously reconsider, since I'd assume a substantial price boost as well. Perhaps it's time to start a separate savings account. :) Oh well, either way that decision is still a ways off yet.

You should enjoy it thoroughly. ; That new sensor is something else - truly killer performance for APS-C - every one of the cameras with that new Sony 16MP sensor are rocking amazing dynamic range and high ISO detail. ; It's also a sensor that seems to really crave good glass - something to consider if you want to get the most out of it. ; I've had a chance to shoot with both a Sony A580 and Nikon D7000, which use a version of that same sensor, and they're both absolutely stunning...my camera's not bad at high ISO but the new ones have stepped up another notch. ; Focus was quick, tracking seemed quite reliable on both the Sony and the Nikon, with the Nikon having an edge with the increased focus point coverage.

The A580 may end up coming next for me, somewhere in the next 3-6 months...no rush yet as still loving my A550 - and depending on if Sony decides to release an A7xx series camera (weatherproofed body and extra control wheel, plus more custom banks would be nice on the semi-pro body).

Look forward to seeing how the D7000 does in your hands. ; Especially with the birdies!
 
Justin I really like the D7000. ; the focusing speed and the lower noise were worth the upgrade. any shortcomings are me and not the camera
 
Good to hear - I hadn't realized you already had it in hand - I should have checked the dates of your comments!! ; Good to know though - most of what I've heard on these new class of cameras with that sensor have been very positive. ; Like you, I wouldn't want to give up the crop factor which comes in handy with wildlife/bird photography - just more convenient and better for spot-focus too.
 
Glad you like it- I am really enjoying mine so far. ; My only complaint is the buffer write speed is a lot slower than I am use to- coming from a D200/D300/D700 it is agonizing at times even shooting slow at 2.5 fps- worse when writing to two cards. ; Aside from that its a great camera- but because of that I'm hoping for a D300ish sized (and priced) D400 next year.
 
thanks. I went from a d80 to d90 to the d7000 so for me it is much faster. ; the main thing that I like over the d90 is the faster focusing speed which is helping for birds in flight
 
Jeff - are you running the fastest card? ; With some of the cameras with smallish buffers, I noticed they are much more sensitive to card write speeds. ; In the first reviews that came about for the Sony A55, they mentioned a huge recovery time of 50 seconds after max 10 fps RAW bursts...which would be pretty long (they used Extreme III card)...but when another site tested it with the top of the line Sony HG Duo card, it was 15 seconds.

That may be an excellent point- pretty sure I bought the cheapest 16gb cards I could find at the time- they don't even have the speed noted on them. ; And I had one that got corrupted on me. ; Maybe time to pick up some better quality cards.
 
the D7000 only uses SD cards Gary. I use sandisk class 10 SDHC cards and I can do 10 shots in burst at 14 bit lossless raw and than after 13 seconds can do 10 more. this is by no means a scientific test
I will get into SDXC when prices drop as the 20 meg raws do eat up card space quick
 
I ordered a pair of PNY 16gb Class-10 cards last night. ; I'll do some testing and report back when they get here if it makes a difference. ; I rarely shoot 10 in a row- its more like 3 in a row- pause - 4 in a row - pause - one - pause - and so on- and it seems like it really gets bogged down when it shouldn't so faster cards might make a big difference. ; I sure hope so.

thats cheap. my sandisk extreme 16 gig was almost 80. I wonder how pny stacks up. I notice the pny is 20mb/s whereas the sandisk is 30mb/s. wonder if that makes a difference too

Jeff, I started using the class 10 on my D90 and after using class 6 I noticed a big difference
 
If (when) I see a noticable difference going from elcheapo cards to 20mb/s Class 10 then I'll probably get some 30mb/s 32gb Sandisk cards after the first of the year. ; Just hated to spend 300 bucks on memory cards right at Christmas- especially since I- eh- kind of already got me-self a photography related present which should be coming on the big brown truck any day now. ; ::)
