HELP!! What causes this?

I hope this is the best place to put this. What causes this to happen? I just bought and formatted a new memory card because I was getting these. They are still happening. Yes, I formatted the card in the camera. Is it the camera? The external drive I store them on? The transfer process? The images are fine on the camera. If it's the camera, how do I get it fixed? I bought it at Best Buy. Thanks for the help, and I hope you all had fun at Mousefest, for those that went. Also can I fix any of these that are already like this?

Okay, I'm thinking that perhaps there is something wrong with the camera - maybe one of the CF pins are broken/bent. But I would say this is rather odd.

1) Try a different computer to download/view. This would include a different memory card reader. Do you use a reader or a cable from the camera? If not the latter, try it. If not the former, try it.

2) You've tried another memory card, but perhaps try running diagnostics on both cards to be sure there aren't somekind of memory issues with both (perhaps during formatting!)) Try formatting in the PC and try again? (I know that it isn't preferred, and I hope they are smaller than 2 GB)

3) Shoot RAW+jpg to see if the problem is the same or if the RAW file is working.

After those questions are answered, and it seems to be the camera, unless you bought it a few weeks ago, I'm guessing off to service it goes. At least Jamesburg won't be *that* busy since Canon Virginia is getting the MkIII repairs. And you're in the same state. I'm in between centers.

I connect the camera directly to the computer via USB, I will try taking the card out and putting it in my card reader.

I formatted the cards both in the camera but I will remove them and run the diagnostics on them to see what happens

3) Shoot RAW+jpg to see if the problem is the same or if the RAW file is working.

I'll also give this a try and see what happens

UPDATE!!

I removed the card from the camera and put it in the card reader on the computer. They looked fine while on the disk, I transferred them, scanned the card, (oops) deleted them, put the card in the camera and formatted it. The pics, well still look the same way as before. The Diagnostics I ran through the computer said the disk was ok, no problems found.

okay, so they looked fine in Windows (correct me if I'm wrong there) while on the card reader? When did they change? In your image processor? Is the filmstrip option look good in windows?

And what software are you using to view/edit?

Did you try formatting the card in the computer and then taking pictures then to try and replicate them? I'm leaning towards something where the camera is splitting the data where it knows where to find but other devices can't

poly, I had a very similiar problem with my external drive. It did not have enough power supply to spin the disc fast enough. I bought a new power supply and the problem was fixed!!

Craig, This has it's own plug for power, it isn't dependant on the computer for it's power.

The pictures looked fine, through windows when I looked at them. I moved them from the card at that time and put them in their normal destination folder on the external drive. I closed everything down, and went back to look at them and they were screwed up. I have looked at them in the windows viewer, and also the canon software and they look messed up in both. I am not sure what you mean by the film strip option.

Software doesn't matter, I have tried canon's, Picasa, HP and Picture trail and they are screwed up in each of them.

I think Craig was referring to the little box that is inbetween the AC outlet and the drive. I had one go shortly after getting my laptop last year.

In My Documents/My Computer viewing windows, if XP finds a directory that is mostly pictures (ie My Pictures), an option of 'filmstrip' will be available as a view option for that folder. I like filmstrip since it will show the picture, resized to fit, with the other pics' thumbnails in a strip to go between quickly. I'm betting Aero has refined this process but I'm not going to find out.

Have you tried saving the pictures on your main HD and viewing them there? If they're fine there but not on the external, then, you've isolated the problem.
