I LOVE MY NIFTY 50!

My Canon 50mm f/1.8 went out for its real test run Sunday. One of the main reasons I bought it was to take pictures on rides. It did BEAUTIFULLY on Spaceship Earth and Pirates.

I love my 50mm 1/8. It's definitely in my bag for MouseFest. But, even with it, it's hard to get a good picture on these rides. You still need a real steady hand or the fortunate situation of being in the right place at the right time with the stop the ride vehicle

Psst. ISO 3200. Heck even 6400.

Is that meant for me? And in reference to a nifty new feature I'm about to discover?

This was taken with the the D300. Granted this was with the 50/1.4D, but....

WOW! I know there is a lot of skill behind those kind of pictures, but I'm holding out hope I can get close with my 50/1.8

I wish I could get something like this. My max ISO is 1600...and then my pics were helped with a little post processing.

Craig, my friend, you are a liar...haha

Hey, it's always nicer to find out you have more power than originally thought. It's like reaching in your pocket and finding a $10 bill you didn't know was there

i love winning money in the laundry lottery.

Yep, now that I have bibble pro and noise ninja, I guess I can give some of these higher iso's a try.

Very nice pictures with this lens... might have to pick one up :) Roger that Jack Sparrow shot is one of the best I've seen from that scene. Nice work!

I might have to get one of these fast primes for my camera. Are they very expensive?

Jeff,

I think you are a Canon shooter so I cannot speak on their lenses. But for the Nikon shooters, the 50mm/1.8 is reasonably priced. Roger, ScottWDW, Craig and a few others pretty much convinced me it was a no brainer to pick up 2 summers ago when I was in the market for a dark-ride lens. It's less than $200

But there is a reason it's my only fast prime. A) anything below f/2.8 is hard to find B) when you do they ain't cheap.

50mm f/1.8 are around $100 or less depending on camera make. Ones that go f/1.4 or wider are much more expensive.

Now wait a sec there Scott....what system are you referring to? I know of only one manual focus model that is currently being manufactured (before the layoffs) that is faster than 1.4 for one of the larger dSLR manufacturers. ;)

Just hedging, Roger. :) Seems I've heard of f/1.2's and f/2's but they are exotic, hard to find and VERY expensive. I'll save my money for a new camera body and stick with my f/1.8.
