I think 99% of us could say that we need to work on our Dark Ride Photography. Even sitting next to Tim getting real-time instructions on what to do tends to yield terrible pictures on my part. The only time I got anything decent was when a ride stopped and I could then use the vehicle as a stable base to shoot from

Unfortunately, when I rode the Haunted Mansion in September (after it's re-opening), it only stopped for me at boring and/or black hole spots of the ride. I think Tim once got stopped near the bride. How fortunate was that!

I have a theory that Tim tips the ride loader with a written set of instructions of where to stop the ride for him.
What do you think? :)

I have a plan. You hire somebody with a wheelchair to ride HM. When your almost to a cool scene you call the person and have them get on the ride. Then the ride will stop for the transfer. Okay just kidding. Time that's exactly what I meant.
 
Thanks Tim. Just curious, do you leave the AF assist 'illuminator' as it's called on my Nikon, on, or off when you do dark rides? I turn my LCD off as to not interfere with others, but I wondered if you left the AF assist on?

nope... camera does a nice job by itself. sometimes has trouble but usually finds something to lock onto pretty quickly.

I usually turn my AF Assist off anyway because it's annoying. It's like "Hey look at me I'm taking your picture" . Next time i'm shooting RAW and I might be able to do some post processing to rescue my pics.
 
Great, thanks Tim! I'm gearing up for our April trip and I was highly disappointed with the dark ride stuff I took in Jan. I'd blame it on the 18month old, but it really wasn't his fault ;)
 
cool, have a great trip... i have to wait til june... it's killing me... i need a fix.
