POTD - GIFTS

I'll kick off a new one. My daughter caught my husband putting a rocking chair together that was to be a Christmas gift. She decided to be Santa's helper and aid in the assembly!

OK, need some advice. I'm trying to get a good pic of the gifts before we open them. It's too dark without a flash and too washed out with one. This is the best I have so far. Any suggestions?

what do you shoot with???

I put my nikon in P mode
and change the flash setting to manual
then adjust the strength accordingly.

I can set my flash anywhere from 1/32nd power to 16th, 8th, 1/4 and 1/2 strength.

Natural light, best to have it is. A steady hand have you must. A tripod one must seek to use.

I have found with my pictures taken at MouseFest that if I shoot in RAW, use a tripod to make sure I get a good crisp shot and underexpose, I could get a really good shot by altering the highlights and fill light in post processing. That's what I did with my lobby shot of the AKL and I had pictures that were far worse than that (underexposed) that came out nicely after post processing (eg. the Tim & Ray Haunted Mansion Hitchhiking Ghost shot on my blog). As soon as I can afford and learn how to use noise cleaning software, some more will be salvaged for bigger print formats
