Tripod recommendations?

I've been enjoying all the fabulous Wishes photos and the night-time photos of Cinderella's castle posted here, and I know it's time for me to break down and carry a tripod. I'm looking for recommendations of light-weight tripods that won't cost a fortune. Anybody?

Yup, it supports my 20D/17-40 with no problems. But I did see a small tripod at a local wal mart for $20 that looked interesting. I played around with it and it seemed decent for the price.

Very nice tripod. Didn't know they made "good" ones. The one I have is a lot cheaper but a decent travel one. Was looking for one like that though.

Weight is VERY VERY VERY close to the limit though.

I'm very paranoid about my gears, so whatever the max weight of the gears I'm going to mount on the tripod I multiply it by at least 1.5 or ideally 2. That is the number I use to select my tripod.

So say my gear is 4 lbs, I'll try to find a tripod that'll hold 8 lbs or if I can't find it, I'll settle with a tripod that holds 6 lbs.

Ball/pan head or the tilt/handle head?

(wondering, seem to be leaning towards a Bogen of the same style that will hold up to 8 lbs.
 
i have the tilt/handle head that i get fairly level and lock in. then i put the manfrotto joystick grip on top of it and use that to move the camera around. i find it makes adjustmens easier and quicker plus you get another 8 inches or so of height. had good luck with this earlier this year so i can recommend it in good conscience.

i used to have a slik sprint mini that i really loved but it was just too short for what i wanted to do so it went up on ebay.

Tim,

I'm a little confused here...the joystick grip something you added on to this tripod? Care to show a pic so I can see the difference between what comes with the tripod and this joystick? Thanks!!!

yup, that's the one. it mounts on the tripod's bolt itself. makes it a bit goofy looking but it works a treat. anyone who was with me at mousefest saw that configuration and it is SWEET. heavy and clunky, but SWEET.

velbon luxisf, and the bogen joystick, as reccommended by tim, bag made at wm mills inc, the local sail loft in town, strap made long enough to wear over head, cross body like arrow quiver, i am a happy user of this setup, if tsa would let us fly with these as carryon i'd be in photo traveler heaven, usable up to my 300 f4 with 20d,
i got the sf model, it's a little shorter than the luxif tim has, but i'm not 6 feet tall, anyone taller than 5'9" needs the taller model

slightly of topic, i wonder if one of those tabletops could be fit into an old shoulder holster, especially one from the old revolver days
i came on the job when there were still a few guys carrying the 6" barrel models, wouldn't that be a way to carry a table top, probably get some strange and extra looks from wdw security going through bag sometimes check with it on

Which is the only reason I had to check it and retrieved my luggage this last time rather than let Magical Express get it. So I could get the tripod out.

I unfortunately think we're a long way from these being allowed to fly on carryon. Again.

Great looking tripod, but I wish it were rated closer to 5 lbs weight. I've got to find a similar setup in that range for my own travel shots. Tim's Velbon recommendation is looking pretty good ...
