the biggest baddest looking turtle I ever saw outside of a zoo
taken at Forsythe NWR
have no idea what turtle it is but it was about 16 inches long

Looks like a Snapper to me. ; They can take your toes and fingers off with that jaw of theirs.

that's a good old american snapping turtle, and he can indeed crush your digits, or anything else you put near that jaw, i have seen ones as big as a garbage can cover break off 3 inch around tree limbs, and i'm talking about healthy wood with strength, we have some huge ones in the backwoods ponds and old flooded cranberry bogs around here

it is the first time I ever saw one of these and normally when I see a turtle in the road at Forsythe I stop and pick it up and move it to safety but I wasn't touching this thing. it was to the side anyway. it has such an ancient look to it like it came right from the age of dinosaurs. it's tail is unreal
