Very Fast Ford

Two things drew me to this 1960s vintage Ford Falcon stationwagon. ; It's red color and Yosemite Sam on its upper side panels. ; The car does the 1/4 mile in less than 11 seconds. ; That's about 125 to 135mph depending on track and weather conditions.

Better than my 13.8 @ 103mph...

I have a pretty quick wagon, and my best 1/4 mile trap was 13.8 at 103mph. ; Looks like I won't challenge any Yosemite Sam red Falcons with large hood intakes. ; ;)

Then again, his is a dedicated quarter miler, and mine's my daily driver. ; :)

Yep, Justin, that's a race car. ; They run Street classes too though there wasn't that many. ; It's also bracket racing so you'd have a chance if you got your time right.

Best I've done was 15 something and 93mph with a mostly stock 1990 Mustang GT. ; Darn if I didn't break out and lost that race. ; Still was happy with the time.
 
Not bad. ; I probably average out to around 14.1 or so - I really only got one solid run out of 4 that got into the 13s. ; My car is just a wee bit modded - mostly just chipped - otherwise stock 3.6L VR6 engine. ; Stock is 270HP and 265 FtLbs torque. ; I've got 4motion AWD, so my driveline loss is a bit higher than FWD. ; Chipped, the car dynos at 259WHP and 250 FtLbs torque. ; Figuring even at 15% driveline loss, that puts it right around 300hp and 290 FtLbs. ; The car is geared tall for high speed running - it's calm even at 140mph, still turning under 4000rpm, but they've done a nice job of gearing the first few gears for quick acceleration with the torque coming on full at 2200rpm and running nearly flat to 5000, right about where peak HP comes on.

Unfortunately, I get run against other 300HP AWD cars, some which are lighter and can get the jump on me. ; I actually take out my full size spare to run, and go at 1/3 tank of gas - every little bit helps! ; :)

One of the things I hope makes it into the Pixelmania schedule is a session on Panning. ; If it does, hope you'll be there, Paul.

The shutter speed for this photo was 1/125th of a second. ; I also tried 1/160th and 1/250th. ; I got less keepers at 1/125th but they were much better than the ones at 1/250th where the wheels were almost frozen. ; I will definitely remember that the next time I'm there. ; Hey, it's only pixels. ; :)
 
Just to show that you can get wheel blur at 1/500, given the proper subject (i.e. a red car made by another company whose name starts with "F"):

 
Yeah...if the car goes fast enough, you can get blur at 1/500 or even better. ; I tried a 1/1000 during an air show for a low-flying F-16 flying right on the deck at just under the speed of sound, and I still had significant blur! ; Of course, he was going about 700MPH. ; Can't let them break the sound barrier when they're under 1/2 mile altitude, or all the beach condos would lose their windows.

Nice Ferrari shot - makes me think of the poor fella who was walloped with a spring a few weeks ago. ; I'd say that particular 'F' company with its red cars is significantly faster than the other 'F' company you started the post with...but there was a time when 'Fix Or Repair Daily' went over to Europe for a big long race and beat that fancy Italian 'F' with a few thunderous things called GT40s.

Dan was telling me about this shot on Saturday at MagicMeets. ; Glad you got around to posting it! ; It's as cool as you described it to me.

Yep, it all depends on how fast your subject is moving. ; When I was at Walt Disney World doing panning shots of the cars on the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway (max speed is 7.5mph), I was using shutter speeds of 1/20th and 1/30th of a second. ; The cars looked like they were flying! ; ;D

Nah...they're on film. ; I'll have to dig through boxes to see if I can maybe scan a few.

I have some old Mavica 1MP shots from the air shows, but no EXIF so I have no idea what the shutter speeds were - those were my earliest days of digital photography.

Here's a shot of a friend/client of mine playing with his Czech fighter jet he bought...this is SERIOUSLY on the deck at around 400MPH:
