Fifi - B-29 Superfortress

Fifi is the only Boeing B-29 that still flies today. ; It ; is owned and operated by the Commemorative Air Force. ; I was able to attend the first day of the show where patrons could purchase rides on many of the WWII aircraft for a fee (hundreds to thousands of dollars, so I stayed on the ground). ; Starting at about 9 am there were planes either taking off, landing or doing low passes all day.

The weather was overcast (has a very brief shower) the whole day, so I masked in a nicer sky in these shots.

Next year I will attend for 2 days and see the show portion of the weekend when more of the planes fly.

I almost jumped on this one this year but it would have been hard after vacation. Love those B-29 photos. ; Did you get any of the B-17's?

Anyone interested in a group trip next year to this event? ; Or are there better ones we could look into?

Nice! ; I got to see Fifi once many years ago when the Frederick Municipal Airport was home to the Stars and Stripes wing of the Confederate Air Force.[nb]Yeah it was that long ago...[/nb] ; I loved the airshow weekend because most of the acts practiced right over my parent's house. ; We would sit on the patio and watch our own private show.

Then the wing got greedy and tried moving the show to a larger airport where they could host more planes and the larger planes could land because the runways at Frederick are too short for the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, Fifi, etc. ; They learned very quickly that when you move the show, the sponsors don't go with you. ; The wing disbanded a couple of years after that.

I am totally in for that. ; They boast in the program that it is the largest show of its kind. ; There were MANY static displays of WWII tents, guns, medic equipment and such, very nicely set up. ;

One disappointment was that the B-17 only took off and then landed, never doing a flyover. ; I would imagine that during the show portion on Sat and Sun it does a few flyovers though. ; I will post the ones I did get though.

P-51 Mustang

This has been my favorite plane since I was about 7 years old. ; Getting a chance to see one fly again was great. ; I had to put the camera down at one point so I could simply enjoy it!

Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress

Here you go Scott. ; This was one of my better ones of the B-17. ; Again, this is the only plane that did not do a flyover at the end of their trip with passengers so I only have takeoff and landing. ; Next year....

Great shots, John, but here's a tip for next time: ; When shooting planes with moving propellers, use a "slower" shutter speed to get some prop blur.

For example, I used 1/180th on this one:

Love that shot Dennis! ; Yep, I was at about 1/500 to 1/1000 most of the time since I wanted sharp images because my panning is not so great. ; Thanks for the tip! ; I will probably be going for 2 days next year so I will have more time to play with more creativity.

Lovely planes, nice shots - wish I could have seen them! ; A P51 & B17 make annual visits to my local airport here in Boca, but I've only had the chance to get over and see them twice, none in the past 4 - 5 years - so I don't have any photos of them. ; They fall often on weekdays when I'm stuck at work.

Thanks Justin and Leo!

Thanks, John, for the B-17!
My pleasure! ; I was thinking of you each time it took off, and hope that it would be this time it did a flyby, only that never happened.
